Patio season is here. Fill it with relaxation, BBQs and backyard fun. Use this guide to cleaning patio furniture to keep your patio pieces in shape against rain, sun and wind.

Umbrella

Clear off your umbrella with some quick sprays from a hose. Use a combo of laundry soap and a wet, soft-bristle brush over the canopy from bottom to top. Rinse your umbrella off and leave it open until it’s dry. If there are any bird droppings between cleaning, wipe them off quickly as the high acid content will damage the fabric.

Cushions

Keep those cushions clean and comfortable by scrubbing them with a solution of one-quart warm water, one teaspoon dishwashing detergent and one tablespoon borax. Let it soak for 15 minutes, rinse them off and leave them to dry on an edge.

Metal

Bring out your all-purpose cleaner and a nylon scrub brush. Wipe down each piece with a microfiber cloth until dry. If you want extra protection, a car wax coat will keep them in tip top shape. If you notice any rust building up or damaged paint, sanding it off and applying a rust-resistant primer and a rust-resistant paint will keep your metal pieces looking great.

Wicker

Use your vacuum with the crevice attachment to get out any dirt or debris from the cracks. Glide over with an all-purpose cleaner and microfiber cloth and rinse the wicker off with a damp sponge. If you want to fight off mildew, wipe it down with a cloth until dry.

Hosing down wicker every few weeks will help keep dirt from building up and regularly wiping it down will remove all excess water and debris, making your wicker pieces last longer.

Glass

A simple dish detergent and glass cleaner are the most effective for cleaning off your patio glass pieces. Clear off the glass with a microfiber towel for a streak-free shine. Clean the underside of glass once per month to keep grime from building up.

Plastic

Clean white plastic with a mix of one gallon of water and three tablespoons of dishwasher detergent. Clean colored plastic with one-fourth cup vinegar mixed with one-quart warm water. WD-40 can be used to restore plastic shine but make sure to wipe it clean with a dry cloth. Protect your plastic patio pieces with a coat of car wax.
