Wear Your Brain Bucket!

February 14, 2019

Long gone are the days when it wasn’t “cool” to wear a helmet. So, save the trendy knitted beanies and caps for after you take your ski boots off for the day.

When it comes to gearing up for a fun day on the slopes, consider your helmet equally as important as your boots, skis and snowboard. Here are some things to consider when it comes to protecting your brain with a helmet:

  1. Safety first! Whether skiing in bounds or in the backcountry, safety should always be a top priority. Even expert skiers are at risk of accidents that can lead to serious repercussions including brain injuries and potentially death. Studies have shown that wearing a helmet to absorb impact from a collision can help reduce risk of sustaining injuries from collisions and protect your brain.
  2. Choose the right helmet for your needs. There are different helmets for different activities. Each type of helmet is designed specifically for each sport’s common falls and types of impact. When getting a helmet for skiing and snowboarding, consider helmets that have a broad range of coverage and padding. The extra padding will not only help protect your brain if you cross paths with a tree, the ground or another skier, but will help you keep warm for those cold winter days.
  3. Keep your helmet up to date! Most ski and snowboard helmets are designed to withstand minor hits here and there. However, if your helmet sustains a large impact that leaves signs of damage, it might be time for a new one. Be sure to examine your helmet throughout the year and be proactive in updating your helmet once it reaches the end of its lifespan.

As you begin to research which type of helmet is best for you, consider coming in to Outpost Sunsport to try some on and learn more about each brand and design. Our selection includes helmets from the brands Giro and Smith!
