If you’re looking to hit the slopes this weekend but don’t want to spend much time on the road, venture up Interstate 70 a bit and you’ll find Breckenridge Ski Resort, just 140 miles away from Fort Collins.

Operating since 1961, Breckenridge is still going strong at just over a half a century old.  You’ll find yourself sitting at 9,600 feet above sea level while enjoying the beautiful Rocky Mountains and refreshing Colorado mountain air.  At just under 3,000 total acres of skiing and riding terrain, there are 187 total trails for you to explore during their operating hours of 8:30AM and 4PM every day of the week.  With 34 total lifts you’ll be up at the top in no time, and riding their groomed runs, bowls and terrain parks, which ever suits your fancy.

Peak 6, Breckenridge’s latest expansion, opened in December and was one of the largest expansions in North America in the last 10 years.  The expansion which added 543 new acres to their skiable terrain, with 400 acres of lift-served terrain and 143 acres of hike to ski terrain, was their first expansion since 2002.  When all is said and done, it is a 23% increase in their total skiable terrain, that’s awesome!

If you’re planning on more than just a day trip you’ll find plenty of great accommodations in the area, including hotels, condominiums, and townhomes, all of which are available for overnight or extended stays.  All that riding will have you craving a few calories to fuel up and if you’re looking to dine on the mountain there are lots of options, like Ski Hill Grill, Sevens, and T Bar which is perfect for your après ski activities.  And if you’re seeking a little excitement later in the evening, Breckenridge’s Main Street has more than 30 bars, pubs, and restaurants for you to hop around to well into the night.
