Another local favorite, Wolf Creek Ski Area, opens up this month, adding 1,600 more skiable acres to your 2014 skiing and snowboarding season!
Located between Pagosa Springs and South Fork, CO, Wolf Creek boasts “The Most Snow in Colorado”, with an average of 430 natural inches every year. Opening in the beginning of early November and closing its lifts for the season in April, the ski area is offers up over 40 different trails ranging in all levels of difficulty. Eight different lifts service the mountain, taking beginners and advanced skiers to the top of runs in no time.
If you are looking for some backcountry skiing Wolf Creek is a great place to start. Riding to the top of the Treasure Chair gives you an array of options if you’re in the mood for a quick traverse to the Bonanza Bowl, Exhibition Ridge, and the North Woods. Or hop on the Alberta Lift and exit right to hike up to the Step Bowl, Knife Ridge, or the Horseshoe Bowl. These backcountry runs will keep you busy with steep runs, rock drops, and cliffs. Note, these runs should only be tackled by advanced intermediate skiers, and you should always wear your helmet.
Complimentary cross-country skiing, don’t mind if we do! With close to 10 kilometers of cross-country ski trails as well; spend a day getting in some non-traditional cardio. You can tour a 4-kilometer loop around the meadow or take on a 6-kilometer loop that takes you to Alberta Reservoir and through the trees. Snowshoers are welcome to the trail as well. This area isn’t patrolled and it is recommended that you travel with a friend. Remember to leave yourself plenty of time to finish before it gets dark.
Whether it is a solid day trip filled with backcountry runs or a weekend getaway with the family, Wolf Creek has a bit of everything!
