Learning how to travel safely in the winter backcountry is vital for Coloradans, which has the highest incidence of avalanche fatalities of any US state. This hour-long session is the perfect place to get started with understanding the dangers of winter backcountry travel, or to remind veterans of preparing for another safe season. We will cover planning, equipment, and signs to look for while spending time in the mountains to decrease your chances of getting caught in an avalanche.
Lucas Mouttet is owner and lead instructor for Never Summer Outdoor School. He is an AIARE course leader with nearly a decade of experience teaching avalanche safety courses in Colorado in addition to over a decade of serving as a backcountry patroller and assisting with winter rescue missions at Cameron Pass. Lucas has taught avalanche safety for ski patrols, CDOT, military groups, Search and Rescue (SAR) teams, US Forest Service, State Forest Service and recreationists. Besides the home turf of Cameron Pass and Rocky Mountain National Park, Lucas has slid downhill on snow in zones from Canada to Argentina to Chamonix and lots of places in between.
