Spring skiing is back! What you need to know to make the best of the Spring ski season

March 10, 2021

From March until the beginning of April, Colorado ski resorts stay open, hoping to bring in the spring skiers. Spring skiing guarantees balmy, warm weather, fewer crowds, cheaper prices, and amazing views uncovered by the prior months of snow. We’ve got tips for making the most of your spring skiing trip, and we’re giving you mountain recommendations too!

Best Spring skiing mountains in Colorado

Every mountain in Colorado is special in its own way, and you can’t go wrong, but there are a few that top the list.

  • Copper Mountain boasts amazing views and tree runs. They have options for beginners to expert skiers. They have a laid-back and entertaining environment. They close on April 25th, 2021.
  • Vail is a bit pricier, but it is worth the extra money for a day pass. They have great restaurants and an adorable village around the mountain. It is one of the largest resorts in the world, boasting some of the best terrains in Colorado. They will be open until April 11th, 2021.
  • Snowmass is one of four mountains within the Aspen territory. It is great mountain for families but also does have ski runs for intermediate skiers as well. They close on April 18th, 2021.
  • Telluride is one of the most scenic mountains to ski in Colorado. It is known for consistently good snowfall and territory for all levels. They offer lots of hike-to terrain for expert skiers. They will be open until April 4th, 2021.
  • Winter Park is a great mountain with two different sides to it: Mary Jane and Winter Park. It is your typical ski resort, with terrain parks, and great runs for all levels! Winter Park is typically more affordable than Aspen and Vail, similar to Copper. Colorado skiers typically are either team Winter Park or team Copper-which will you be? They close on April 25th, 2021.

Essential tips for a successful spring ski day

  • Lather up on the sunscreen, you will be at a high altitude, with warmer weather and stronger UV rays. There is nothing worse than a ski goggle burn.
  • Ensure you have good goggles and sunglasses. With the stronger UV rays, your eyes are more prone to burning.
  • To make the best of your ski day, dress in layers so you are able to be comfortable in all weather conditions that day.
  • BYOB! Nothing is better for spring skiing than your beverage of choice! Save money, and time, and bring your own beverages for a quick break.
  • Watch out for rocks and grass. Melting snow comes hand in hand with spring skiing. Be cautious of rocks or grassy terrain that might not have been exposed prior to snowmelt!
  • Double-check COVID requirements for each mountain before hitting the road. For example, Pitkin County, meaning all Aspen mountains, is requiring a COVID-19 test to spend the night. This also goes for planning where and what to eat when you’re up in the mountains. Most of the ski towns’ websites will list what is open for dining and how you can eat there, whether it be to-go, limited indoor seating, or closed.

Life is different due to COVID-19, and many destination spring break trips aren’t realistic at the moment. Ski trips are a great alternative for families, couples, friends, or individuals to get outside, get some exercise, and enjoy the beauty of Colorado!
